Not everyone might have liked how the third series of Love/Hate ended but one person says it was exactly what was needed.

Commissioning Editor for RTÉ Drama Jane Gogan has said that the death of Darren, played by Irish heartthrob Robert Sheehan, was key for the gritty drama which is written by Stuart Carolan.

“Stuart hasn’t got a whit of sentimentality within him. It is a meticulously researched series… He brings a great variable experience having come from current affairs. You can’t be sentimental when you go into any kind of drama,” she explained to the Irish Independent.

The crime series is known for its shocking drama.

While it may have broken a few hearts, almost one million people tuned in to watch the plot unfold on Sunday night which goes to show just how popular the latest series has been this year.

Gogan said: “It comes from the hard work, immense creativity and ingenuity of the many people involved… A superb cast, brilliant writing and direction under the umbrella of good producing has brought a deep connection with the audience for the last six weeks.”

Robert Sheehan took a bullet in the final episode of the latest series.

Speaking about the man who will not make his return to the show, she added: “Robert Sheehan is a young actor who brought such a special and unique charisma to Darren. It was hugely difficult to say goodbye to him and I understand the audience’s loss at his demise.”

But while one of our favourite faces might be gone, the show itself will be back for a fourth series which is said to start production early next year. As if that’s not enough it has also been sold to a number of countries including Scotland, Australia and America.
