The truly memorable proposal takes a lot of planning.
But sometimes it is the little twists of fate that mean you will NEVER forget that meaningful moment.
One man who will attest to this fact is Matthew Picca who popped the question to his girlfriend Kayla while on holidays in Southport, North Carolina.
However, (we can hardly say it) as he bent down on one knee on the boardwalk and opened the box, the ring slipped through the wooden planks and into the ocean.

Kayla told WBTV: “As he opened the ring box, the ring fell out of the box and fell through the cracks on the deck and into the water. I didn’t even get to see it before it dropped.
“I covered my face and began to cry because I knew my boyfriend was devastated.
“Matthew did not even get to say anything to me before the ring fell into the ocean.”
Matthew proceeded to jump into the ocean in an attempt to retrieve the ring and was quickly joined by sympathetic onlookers.
After a gruelling ninety minutes of searching, they managed to find the ring and Matthew could propose for a second time.
Kayla said: “It was the best feeling in the world. My fiancé, soaking wet, smelling like salty, fishing water, proceeded to get down on one knee and put the beautiful ring on my finger!”
After all that, we are SO glad to report that she said yes and the happy couple plan to marry in Southport next year.
