Would this price encourage you to quit?

Smokers will blow an average price of €110,000 on cigarettes in their lifetime, a new study has found.

Experts have revealed that the average smoker puffs nearly four packets a week, spending around €34. This adds up to a startling €1,768 a year.

They could treat themselves to a new second-hand car or a few weeks holidaying in Thailand with the same money.

Dermot Ryan from electronic cigarette makers E-Lites, which commissioned the survey, said: “Smoking has always been expensive, but it’s staggering to see the cost in black and white.

“Thinking about what else you could spend that amount of money on can really give you the motivation to seek help.”

Irish smokers spend over €100,000 on the habit in their lifetime.

The study of 2,000 smokers found the huge cost of fags means 61 per cent will try to cut down or quit if there is a price increase in the Budget on December 5.

The survey also showed the average woman spends €103,000 on clothes in her lifetime and coffee drinkers splash €21,500.

That’s the price of an expensive habit…
