Step away from the tea-towel and wipe down that mobile phone. A new survey published in the Food Protection Trends has touted the cloth and tech device as the most contaminated objects in your kitchen.

So how did these everyday items beat the chopping board to the germ-infested title?

While watching 123 people prepare meals on camera, the same worrying trends kept cropping up during their culinary experience.

According to the results, most people tend to touch a tea towel before washing their hands, which in turn spreads harmful bugs across your counter-tops. This is later used in serving dishes, wiping plates and cleaning down counter-tops.

The study, conducted by the researchers at the University of Arizona, found that 90 per cent of tea towels in kitchen contain food-poisoning bacteria.

The same study confirmed that your phone is a hotbed for bacteria, with most people carrying their phone in and out of the bathroom, and touching screens while they’re cooking meals.

So next time you go to make a meal, maybe leave your phone charging in the bedroom.
