Isn’t It Well For Ye, a new book by Cork comedian Colm O’Regan, cheekily delves into the philosophy of the typical Irish mammy.
The book is a spin off of Colm’s comedic Twitter account @irishmammies to which over 50,000 followers have been attracted by the witty persona of the so called Irish mam.
According to The Irish Daily Mirror, Colm said: “The more I wrote, the more people responded and retweeted. There are now almost 55,000 followers with people joining at the rate of 100 to 200 per day.”
The tongue and cheek book is a collection of essays, observations and illustrations all written by Colm’s character ‘the Irish mammy.’
“I couldn’t just reproduce the tweets. What I’ve done is to act as a kind of observer, describing the world be interested in her and so I’m trying to convey her worldview across a range of topics such as home, family and work.
Colm’s Twitter page has even attracted A-list followers like Marian Keyes, Laurne Laverne and Dara O’Briain who tune in for the Irish mammy’s famously funny tweets.
Recent tweets include: “I don’t care how many goals they’re after letting in. I don’t want to hear THAT word in this house again. Do you hear me now?”
“Had you a good sleep? Were you warm enough? You didn’t need all the extra blankets at all I suppose.”
“They are supposed to convey scenes of domesticity that resonate with people. The account has a lot of following among emigrants and I think that’s because it enables them to experience the nostalgia.
“Twitter is great for displaying the power of very few words. She can say something laden with meaning, in less than 140 characters. It’s like getting a call from home,” he said.
