The advice published in The Review of Economics and Statistics, guide people to approach their alternatives in just four steps:
- Divide the options into piles of four
- Choose the best option from each pile
- Put the winners from the first round into a new finalist pile
- Choose the best option from winners of the earlier four selections
The study found that those who followed the pattern were more likely to feel satisfied they had made the right decision when they had eliminated each alternative on a round-by-round basis.
