Almost 5,000 Dunnes Stores staff will stage a one-day strike today in a dispute over a number of issues.

These include demands for secure hours, job security, pay and the right to representation by a trade union.

It has been reported that the strike will affect 107 stores in the Republic of Ireland.

Half of the 10,000-strong group of employees, who are members of the union Mandate, will take part in the industrial action.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny expressed to the Dáil this week that he hoped that the strike does not go ahead.

He added that he supports “certainty and the right of people to know from their employer what hours they are expected to work each week, in so far as that is possible”.
