A building has collapsed in New York City.

The area in Manhattan’s East Village, located near New York University, is currently being evacuated according to reports.

The New York Fire Department tweeted that they are responding to “a major building collapse”.

Emergency services on the scene say that at least two people are in critical condition with up to 12 injured.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that a preliminary investigation suggested a gas explosion caused the collapse and subsequent fire.
