If you never manage to keep to ‘just one’ it could be down to your popularity.
A new study has shown that the numbers of drinks you have at the pub increases with the number of friends in your drinking group. So the bigger turnout for happy hour, means the more drinks you’ll be downing this weekend.
A study published in the journal Addiction collected information from 200 participants who answered questions every hour on their smartphones wile out drinking.
The participants were asked to report the number of drinks they had consumed as well as the number of friends present while they were out. The results showed that men were more influenced to increase their drinking intake when their friend count started hiking, but women were affected too.
The study also found the people you socialise could encourage higher consumption if you are drinking with bole male and female friends.
The study is believed to be a stronger indication than any insight into peer drinking previously conducted, as the results come from a live environment rather than a lab study.
