Dublin’s Temple Street Hospital has revealed that over 100 children under the age of 17 have been treated for alcohol poisoning at the hospital over the last three years.
The hospital has stated that 114 children as young as 11 years of age have come to the hospital presenting with “acute alcohol intoxication”, which is also known as alcohol poisoning.
According to The Sunday Times, 74 of those treated were girls.
“I think there are two things at play here,” said Dr Alf Nicholson, the Consultant Paediatrician at Temple Street. “One is that girls react less well to alcohol in large volumes because they are of smaller size.
“But I think there is just a general trend in Ireland today for the young girls, teenagers and post-adolescent girls to take more alcohol than before and a lot more spirits than before.”
