Online dating comes with its dangers but car theft isn’t exactly one of the first things that springs to mind.
A man has been jailed for 18 months after stealing a woman’s car on their very first date.
Wesley Brennan met Leoney Dunphy on popular dating site Plenty of Fish and the pair arranged to meet for dinner in the capital city on March 26th, 2013.
Dunphy, who offered to drive, told Gardaí that Brennan’s behaviour quickly changed and he became irate over her driving skills. Eventually Brennan ordered her to get out of the car on Dublin’s Wicklow Street in order to let him park.
Becoming ‘flustered’, Dunphy did what she was asked and Brennan, who was identified to Gardaí by the pair’s mutual friends in the background of his profile photographs on the dating site, drove off and later sold the vehicle to a scrap yard in Ashbourne, Co. Meath.
The Dublin man pleaded guilty to the theft of the Honda worth €5,500 and apologised for wasting Gardaí time.
While imposing the sentence, Judge Martin Nolan said that the 28-year-old “was a bit lacking in the chivalry stakes”.
We’ll never complain about a bad date ever again.
