Tanzania
Many of us dream on going on an animal safari in Africa and although it might take months if not years to save up for, it will certainly be worth your while.
Be it Kenya, Tanzania or any other location in Africa, it will be the trip of a lifetime.
Here, we look at a safari in Tanzania – finishing off with a bit of R’n’R time in Zanzibar.
Get organized
It’s a BIG trip planning an adventure safari in Tanzania so before you do anything else, make sure you price out all the options, not just on flights but also on tours and accommodation.
There can often be enormous differences in price from one safari tour company to the next, but very little difference in quality – so be sure to do your research well before you fill in your credit card details on those flights.
Handy hint: Negotiation is always an option with Tanzanian tour operators. The more people on your trip, the lower the price.
So now you’re there…
Okay, you’ve arrived, the sun is shining and you’re raring to go – so what next? Hmm, hold up – have you actually got everything you need? Make sure to pack your camera charger, binoculars – yes really – and plenty of sun cream and mosquito spray. If you have those four things, Tanzania is now your oyster.
Kilimanjaro
Landing in Kilimanjaro airport can be a bit of a shock to the system. If you are meeting a tour group this is usually where you will meet your guide. If not, make sure to have booked a room in some of the beautiful hotels surrounding the city before you begin your safari.
Handy hint: If you are using a tour operator, get them to pick you up at the airport so you are stress-free from the moment you land. L’Oasis Lodge is a gorgeous spot to stay en route.
Tarangire National Park
One of the main stops on all safari routes, Tarangire National Park is usually the first stop on the route. Most safaris will see you head off pretty early to the home of elephants and bao bab trees.
Handy hint: Stay overnight in the Tarangire Safari Lodge to get an authentic experience of being out on the plains.
Lake Manyara
Another National Park, Lake Manyara will be the highlight for many on the trip. Located at the bottom of the western wall of the spectacular Great Rift Valley there will be amazing views and animals to see en route.
Handy hint: The Kudu Lodge is a nice spot to stay for some serious luxury after a long day out in the jeep.
Ngorongoro Crater
The world heritage site is a must-stop on any safari in Tanzania. The area is the world’s largest Caldera, or collapsed volcano, and boasts more than 30,000 animals on site.
Handy hint: Keep an eye out as you drive by looking up in the trees as there are often sleeping lions hiding in the branches.
Serengeti National Park
Perhaps the most famous of Tanzania’s National Parks is Serengeti National Park. The area is famous for its wildebeest, zebra and the Nile crocodile.
Handy hint: Leave early in the morning for Serengeti as you will need a lot of time to appreciate its beauty.
Arusha
Brimming with colour and local culture, Arusha is usually the last stop off on the way back to the airport. It is a major hub for business and markets and is worth a stay for a night at least.
Handy hint: It might be a nice spot to catch up on some sleep after Serengeti.
Zanzibar
The spot where beach lovers can catch up on some rays after a gruelling but amazing safari, Zanzibar is a startling mix of old traditions and modern tourism. Book your spot in one of the many forms of beach side accommodation. Don’t forget – you need to book another flight to get there and make sure to pay a visit to Gerry’s Bar!
Handy hint: The small little planes that fly over to Zanzibar will give you an absolutely stunning bird’s eye view of the area. Have your camera at the ready!
Mount Kilimanjaro
If you are not absolutely wrecked after all that, then fly back to Tanzania and prepare to tackle the heights of Kilimanjaro. With stunning views worth every gruelling step, it will be worth the pain!
Handy hint: Pack medicine especially if you are prone to altitude sickness and don’t forget a lot of plasters!
Insider’s tip:
If there is a football lover in your life, pick up some unique Zanzibar or Tanzania football jerseys on the beach in Zanzibar. Don’t forget – being on safari is all about seeing the Big Five animals… How many will you spot?
