We’re all aware that a good sob story is the X Factor golden ticket but the emotion has gone into overdrive at this year’s auditions.

Twenty-four year old James Arthur has become the hot favourite to win this year’s competition after touching the judges with the story of how he became homeless as a teenager… and we suppose his singing must have impressed them too.

James revealed that his life spiraled out of control in his teens as a result of his parent’s bad relationship with one another.

According to The Irish Mirror James said: “My mum and dad split up when I was very young and they didn’t have any sort of relationship with each other for my entire life.

“I went off the rails, especially at school. I used to get suspended and I ended up sleeping rough,” said James.

However James was eventually taken into foster care where his love of music blossomed.

“I just wanted to get away, so initially music was a coping mechanism.”

The singer has become the bookie’s hot favourite after his powerful rendition of Tulisa Contostavlos’ song Young.

James’ mother and father decided to put their past behind them and they both attended their son’s audition in Newcastle.

It was the first time the pair has been in the same room as one another in 22 years.

James told the judges about his scary past

After his performance, Nicole Scherzinger said: “Well James. I see why your mom and dad put their differences aside.

“I’m looking for an artist who inspires me and that’s exactly what you did today.

“You inspired me and that’s because you sat on that stage and bared your soul to us.”

Louis Walsh said: “James you’re a real original and I think from today on, your life is going to change.”

James certainly has taking Her.ie’s audition advice but do you think the X Factor sob stories are becoming out of control?

James Arthur’s audition will be broadcast on tonight’s show, which starts at 7.45 on TV3.
