A new TV news channel in Egypt has an all-female staff, but every presenter is clad head-to-toe in the niqab.

Black is so in this season. So much so, it’s the only colour of choice at one Egyptian TV news channel.

Presenters at the all female ‘Maria TV’ in Cairo are not allowed to show their faces during the broadcasts, so while presenting the are covered in black veils and robes from head to toe.

The newly launched channel sees women operating the cameras, presenting and producing the shows and conducting interviews with female guests, while no men are allowed on air in any capacity during the programming.

While clad in the niqabs, the women swap beauty tips, obviously without any demonstrations. The only female face actually seen on the channel belongs to a puppet, used to poke fun at news stories.

This puppet is the only female face visible on Maria TV, Egypt.

The niqab has regained some popularity in Egypt following the rise to power of conservative Muslims last year, however most women in the country still opt to wear a scarf that covers the hair and not the face.
