Chris De burgh has been singing about it for years now, but recent studies prove that wearing red attracts much more male attention than any other colour.
Psychologists at Wuhan University in China conducted the research on 280 heterosexual students.
Each student was presented with 32 photographs of the opposite sex and asked to rate the individuals according to how attractive they found them.
The people in the pictures wore clothing garments coloured blue, white or red.
According to the findings men found ladies wearing read the most attractive and rated them at the top of the poll for appearing warm, approachable and competent.
Dr Fangfang Wen, who led the study, published the results in the journal, Evolutionary Psychology, explained: “The colour red was shown to have a boosting effect on the sexual attractiveness of women with feminine facial traits.
“In addition, regardless of sexual dimorphism cues, male participants rated women with red as warmer and more competent”.
In the past, the colour red has been associated with romance, passion and fertility.
In 2013, scientists at the University of British Columbia, Canada suggested females opted for red or pink clothing when they are ovulating, in a bid to attract a mate.
Lad in red just doesn’t have the same ring, or effect, with the study concluding that red had a “marginally significant” effect on a male’s sexual attractiveness.
So single ladies, when we say go out and ‘paint the town red’, we really mean it.
Now for the Chris De Burgh classic, all together now, “I’ve never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight…”
