Attention All Red Heads: Did You Know You’re An Endangered Species?

We're on red alert!

Her

To all our red-headed readers, scientists are warning your race is in trouble – all thanks to climate change.

Scottish scientists have revealed they believe climate change could lead to the end of the red-hair gene, with a knock-on effect of a reduction in ginger haired people and the eventual extinction of the entire flame-haired race.

Research from our northern neighbours suggest that the lack of sun in these parts is the main factor in the higher percentage of red-haired people in Ireland and the UK, with 10% of Irish people sporting the recessive gene.

Since the temperatures are rising, it’s believed that red-haired natives will soon become an endangered species.

Speaking to The Independent, Dr Alistair Moffat, managing director ScotlandsDNA, said:

“We think red hair in Scotland, Ireland and in the North of England is adaption to the climate. I think the reason for light skin and red hair is that we do not get enough sun and we have to get all the Vitamin D we can.

“If the climate is changing and it is to become more cloudy or less cloudy then this will affect the gene. If it was to get less cloudy and there was more sun, then yes, there would be fewer people carrying the gene.”

So those red haired, blue eyed babies are not adaptable to a warmer climate… but with the usual Irish summer kicking in, we’re not sure there’s much cause for worry yet.
