Irish films have always been prettys successful in terms of international film festivals, in fact, it’s where a lot of our fine directors manage to get their start for their future careers.
Already this year, we have two shorts selected for the Tribeca festival among others and this short film can be added to the latest which is seeing success internationally.
Volkswagen Joe tells the story of a mechanic from Northern Ireland during The Troubles who must face a tough decision that will change everything. The film is an adaption of an award winning play written by well known Cavan playwright Brendan McCann.
Directed by Brian Deane, the project was made possible by a peace and reconciliation fund called PEACE III with support from the Belturbet Drama Society. The goal of the project was always to further develop the relationship between the two political and religious communities North and South of the border.
The lead actor is the brilliant Stuart Graham from Hunger, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Fall. Here’s the trailer.
The film will be next screened at the Fastnet Film Festival in Cork on May 22nd.
