No, it won’t be anything like the Disney version!
Sofia Coppola is set to direct the new Little Mermaid adaptation but it’s expected to hark back to the darker Hans Christian Andersen fairytale rather than its other happier portrayals.
Deadline reports that Coppola, who directed the critically acclaimed Lost in Translation, is currently in talks to create a live-action version of the movie – Caroline Thompson is rewriting the script.
The director is stepping in for Joe Wright (Atonment, Pride & Prejudice) who originally was going to be at the helm of the new project.
Deadline says that production of The Little Mermaid is expected to “move quickly”.
No release date or cast members for the movie have been confirmed as of yet.
